How to Apply for Government Jobs in South Africa: The Z83 Form Explained

Government jobs offer stability, good benefits and the chance to serve your community — and they're open to a wide range of skill levels. But public service applications have strict rules, and the most common reason for rejection is a Z83 form that's filled in incorrectly. This guide walks you through it.

What is the Z83 form?

The Z83 is the official application-for-employment form required for all public service vacancies in South Africa. No matter the department or province, if it's a government post, you apply using the Z83. Applications without a properly completed Z83 are usually disqualified immediately.

The current (new) Z83 asks for more detail than the old version, including sections on criminal history and business interests, and it must be signed and initialled in the right places.

How to complete the new Z83 correctly

  • Use the latest version. Download the current Z83 from the official government site or get it from any government department; don't use an old copy.
  • Complete every relevant field. Incomplete forms are rejected. If a section doesn't apply, write "N/A" rather than leaving it blank.
  • Answer the declaration honestly — including the criminal-history and business-interest questions.
  • Sign and initial where required (the form is initialled throughout, not just signed once).
  • Attach an updated CV. The Z83 is submitted together with your CV.

Do you need certified copies?

This is where many applicants go wrong. Under the current rules, you usually do NOT submit certified copies at application stage — you attach an updated CV with the Z83, and the department only requests certified copies of your ID and qualifications from shortlisted candidates. Always read the advert, though: some posts still specify what to attach. When certified copies are required, they must generally be less than 6 months old and certified at a police station or court.

Step-by-step application

  1. Find a live vacancy. Browse current government vacancies on Jobenza and read the advert in full.
  2. Note the reference number and closing date. Every post has a reference number that must appear on your application.
  3. Complete the new Z83 carefully, as above.
  4. Attach your updated CV (and only the documents the advert asks for at this stage).
  5. Submit before the deadline, exactly as instructed — email, post, or hand delivery. Late or emailed-when-not-allowed applications are rejected.

Watch out for scams

Government jobs are never sold. If anyone asks you to pay for a post, guarantee you a job, or pay to "fast-track" your Z83, it's a scam. Report it and walk away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one Z83 for many jobs? Complete a fresh, post-specific Z83 for each vacancy, with the correct reference number.

Do I need a degree? Government posts range from general workers and administrative clerks to professionals — many entry-level roles need only matric.

What if I'm shortlisted? You'll be asked for certified copies and may sit an interview or competency assessment.
